Fear

Fear! I know you've heard it said that a horse can sense our fear; this is true. But here's what really happens: we humans are predators and horses are prey animals. Therefore, they don't understand how we possibly could be afraid of them. It should be the other way around. They think we are afraid of something they can't see and we're bringing it with us. This also happens when we're on their back. They spook, we stiffen up with fright, they take off at a full run and we lose alpha (alpha can't be afraid). Now if the horse can get rid of that dead weight on his back he can go faster. We get left on the trail for the boogieman to eat and the horse lives to graze another day. Sound familiar? You must learn to handle your fear, even if this means disguising it with another emotion. Practice controlling your fear when you are not around the horse and when you are with him, stay focused on what the horse needs to do, rather than what the horse might do to you.

Be good to your horse
