This website is strictly to help educate you about horses. It is time for me to publicly defend my opinion about the horse's feet. In my many years of owning and training horses, I have had the opportunity to experience both shod and shoeless horses. It is my honest opinion (derived by my own experience and observation of countless horses) that a horse should never have to have a shoe. I allowed myself to go along with the shoe theory for many years and I allowed my horses feet to get worse and worse. I stood by and watched as my horses feet got flatter and the hoof walls began to split and seperate. Not being able to find someone at that time who knew anything about natural barefoot trimming, I began to educate myself about horse's feet and the proper way they should be trimmed. I took on the task of trimming my own horses. It took almost a year to totally rehabilitate my horse's feet, but I was able to ride (sometimes in boots) the entire time. Now their feet are beautiful and tough as nails. I take my horses everywhere and ride them in places where sometimes shod horses fail. Natural barefoot trimmers are now a lot easier to locate and there are websites (www.barefootforsoundness.com) to go to that will educate you about your horse's feet. It's just not that hard to do. If you can file your own fingernails, you can trim your own horse's feet. So, before you dispute my findings, have a look or yourself. I'm sure you will be amazed at what you will find. At least you will be able to ask intelligent questions and once you have found out what really goes on with you horses feet, you will not be satisfied with answers such as "I have had horses all my life" or "My dad was putting shoes on horses for as long as I can remember" or "Some Horses just have to have shoes." Once again, I will remind you that "a healthy horse is a happy horse and a happy horse is easy to train." I will admit that I have refused to train many horses because of the condition of their feet. You don't have to take my advice, but you owe it to yourself and to your horse to find out the truth. There are many reasons why your horse should properly be trimmed. Health and strength are only two. Good health starts from the ground up and the feet are on the ground. Be good to your horse Dennis |
